Last Saturday we received an email from our adoption agency informing us that our State Criminal Background Checks would expire in late June. The agency gives 90 day warnings about expiring paperwork in order to help keep your file active at all times - any of these documents expiring could result in major delays in the process, and worst case scenario, rejection of the adoption altogether.
We started gathering our paperwork in May/June of last year in order for our homestudy to happen in July and be filed with our agency by the end of the summer. Due to unforeseen delays, we didn't become a waiting family until October - almost five months after a lot of the original required legal documents were pulled together. Our homestudy coordinator just informed me that other documents will most likely expire soon as well, like our FBI fingerprints, and our homestudy will expire in August.
Getting these documents again will run us at least $100, plus another $700 for the homestudy to be updated.
$800 more just to update some legal documents. Ugh. I am discouraged today.
Oh, I know how you feel! Our last international adoption (we've adopted 3 times) took almost 2 years. We had to redo most of our docs 3 times. Then when we finally went before a judge after our bonding period in Kazakhstan, she required us to redo the whole dossier; she gave us 2 weeks to get it done, something I was sure was impossible. It was expensive, frustrating, just plain maddening! But you know what? We got it done...our kids are home...we got through it and you will, too! Just hang in there...remember, that which does not kill us makes us strong. CRAZY but strong.
