My 13th "Fix"

Monday, February 16, 2015

Lucky 13! I received my 13th Stitch Fix on Friday the 13th (oh the irony!) I requested another pair of dark skinny jeans (my second pair from Loft need to be retired!) and a few light weight sweaters to transition from winter to fall.  I had Matt take some photos with our real camera this time - I felt like a total goob taking pictures like a model, but I think it helps to see how things fit instead of them just laid out or hung up like I used to do!

Overall, I loved this fix! Here is what they picked for me:

Mavi Skinny Jeans and Sanctuary Sweater
I loved the jeans - they fit perfectly and have the right amount of stretch in them. They're a navy blue rinse which is a nice change from my almost black-blue pair that I got in my 9th fix last year. But the sweater was just not for me - I love a v-neck, and it was very soft, but the color blocking and the taupe color was all wrong for me.

Market & Spruce Sweater
Elbow patches sold me on this, and I adore the color. It's a little long, but once I lose some weight it might look better on me totally pulled down over my hips.

THML Knit Top
I would never choose this off the rack - I tend to avoid orange and embroidery, but I really liked the way this looked. I can wear this with my skinny black ankle pants for work, skinny jeans or even shorts in the summer.

41Hawthorn Colorblock Sweater
I love coral and although I don't really like taupe colors on me, because the color is closer to my face, I think this looks ok. The colorblock is cool and it buttons down the back which is a nice detail.

Overall, I loved this fix. If you haven't signed up yet for their service, I highly recommend it! You can sign up directly with them, or use my referral link: stitchfix.com

*I will receive credits for each referral.

No more excuses: on why I started running again

Friday, January 9, 2015

Confession time: I have gained some weight.

Body image and health is always an awkward and sensitive topic to talk about and especially write about, but I think I am finally up to the task. I have never been a naturally long, lean or thin woman. Most of the women in my family are hourglass shaped – built with hips, narrow waists and broad shoulders. All of us have a little meat on our bones. So I was destined, genetically speaking, to be built the same.

I have been totally ok with my body shape my entire life. I like having curves, even though it has made it hard to find pants that fit in both the hips and the waist, and that I have always had to watch what I eat because 5 pounds on a petite curvy girl can look a little more like 10 pounds depending on where it lands. Until my mid-twenties, I was super active and had a decent metabolism, but I still struggled with gaining weight if I didn’t watch every bite.

Then my thirties began and it has been such a struggle. (This is when I want to throw in one of those #thestruggleisreal cause it really is!) Part of the struggle was related to my declining metabolism (getting older sucks y’all), part of it was the fertility drugs I was on, but in the last few years, most of it was me and my lack of discipline. Although I went through seasons of eating well, and ensuring I didn’t overdo it on things like desserts or wine or bread, I still had too many days where I threw caution to wind and ate what I wanted. Combine that with a desk job and a child who demands most of your attention after work, and I convinced myself I had no time to work out.

So I gained weight. It was inevitable. My work pants are a little too snug, my skinny jeans do not make me look skinny and I am having to wear looser tops to cover my middle. But more than the clothes being tight in the wrong places, I feel yucky. I'm overly tired and fatigued in a way that sleep cannot help, and I am mentally thinking about things in a more negative way because I feel so negative about how I look.

And I think that is the thing that made me want to do something about it. So I starting running again in early December.

About 10 years ago, running was my primary way of working out and relieving stress. I couldn’t afford a gym membership and I lived in a neighborhood with sidewalks and pretty old homes to look at so I ran. I ran every day after work for 45 minutes and it was one of the highlights of my day. A runners high is a real thing and I became addicted to it. I also became addicted to the calmness I felt after my run – I could think without distractions. Sure I had shin splints sometimes and an old ankle injury would flare up, but overall running was amazing. It got me healthy, it kept me at a decent weight and it provided a routine I could rely on. It led me to do a lot of things I had either never done, or needed to do – like run a 5K, or join a running club, and also eat better on a consistent basis.

I missed running. I ran here and there over the last decade, but that old ankle injury, plus a stress fracture I developed shortly after I got married, made it hard sometimes. Then the getting out of shape made it harder, Then the extra weight made it worse.

There is always an excuse to wait, to shove things off, to come up with reasons why we can’t or we shouldn’t do something. I had no reasons left. So l started running again. 1 minute of brisk walking, 4 minutes of running over and over for 30 minutes. I do this routine every other day – sometimes by myself, sometimes pushing Brighton in her stroller (which by the way is 50 pounds - 25 pounds of her, 24.5 pounds of her stroller - and pushing that uphill when you are out of shape feels like dying).

Some days I love it and other days I want to quit. My back hurts after I run. My legs hurt. I'm embarrassed at times at how slow I am. But I know the benefits so I keep going. It’s not about how far or how fast I run, it’s about being consistent and disciplined and treating myself through good health.

Slow and steady wins the skinny jeans. (Or so I say.)

Not another capsule

Friday, December 19, 2014

So it seems everyone is talking about capsule wardrobes. If you don't know what one is, this is a great introduction to one. The idea is that your wardrobe is small and limited to only pieces you 100% love, fit your body, can be interchangeable etc. I've read about a few bloggers / fashion writers creating capsule wardrobes by season, but have even seen people take it to the extreme and have a capsule for all seasons (meaning like 40 pieces of clothing for the whole year!)

I totally get the appeal - it's easier to get dressed in the morning, you can get your money's worth out of the items you have, you know that whatever you wear you'll be comfortable in and it forces you to be more creative with less.

But I just can't do it.

First, I have two wardrobes already - a work one and a regular life one. They don't overlap that much, save a few shirts and sweaters. My work wardrobe is designed for the industry and area of the country I work in - it consists mostly of black/brown/navy/grey and includes lots of dress pants, pencil skirts, cardigans, blazers and a random dress here and there. There are a few blouses and sweaters I wear to work and also on the weekends in my "regular" life, but mostly my work style isn't my true style. It's the style I have to adapt to because my company and the people I work with are super conservative, business professional and preppy. I try to mix it up by wearing statement jewelry, carrying a brightly colored bag or wearing cool flats, but honestly that wardrobe is a snooze-fest. And that's on purpose. I purchase pants, skirts and blazers that are timeless and simple so I can use them year over year, but buy items like cardigans and blouses on the cheap.

My regular life wardrobe is where I could try the capsule concept, but honestly I don't want to. I like variety since I have very little of it 40+ hours a week. I do have a lot of great basics I wear all the time like dark rinse and black skinny jeans, a green utility jacket for fall, grey and white t-shirts and my grey Vans sneakers, but I can't bring myself to limit it to just those items.

Second, the idea sounds like it costs just as much money as regular shopping. I clean out my closet every season anyways, donating or selling items that I don't love anymore and don't fit. I spent a little extra this fall and purchased some new "basic" items like a few blouses that I could wear for any occasion, plus a new pair of jeans, but trying to buy more just to create a perfect capsule sounds more expensive to me.

Third, I just love shopping. I'm sure I'll get raked over the coals for admitting that, but I love it. I'm not addicted by any means, and I don't do it often, but I love the process of it. I also love Stitch Fix. My referral link if you want to sign up: stitchfix.com)

And I can't get rid of some of my clothes - even though I have this ugly pair of boyfriend jeans that make me look 10 pounds heavier, I can't throw them out. They're comfortable and perfect for working in the yard on cold days, or wearing them when I work from home. I have a few things that are sentimental too - a cherry print sundress, a puffer vest that was my dad's from the 70s and a silk tank top I bought with my first real paycheck. It's weird to be sentimental about clothes, but I am about a few things.

Although I am really impressed by those who choose to do a seasonal capsule. I just can't do it myself (which probably makes me uncool. Oh well.)

Beauty: My new skincare routine

My "before" skin
I have always had a complicated relationship with the sun. I am a true summer girl - I love the heat, the humidity and the glow it gives my skin after a day outdoors. But I also burn easily and freckle easily and those two things have also left my face and chest looking older and more damaged than I imagined - brown spots, discoloration, early wrinkles around my mouth and eyes and more freckles than I could ever imagine.

The first time I saw my skin under one of those UV lights at the dermatologist office I was 24 years old, but looked almost 50 under the light - sun damage was all over my face, neck and chest. I was horrified and knew I needed to start taking better care of my skin. I went out and bought what I could find on the market - the highest sunscreen possible, combined with an anti-aging night cream, moisturizing day cream with SPF and some eye serum.

That was over 10 years ago and thankfully the beauty industry has been particularly innovative in the area of skin care. I have tried a ton of anti-aging products and up until last winter, my favorite was an over the counter night cream by RoC.

Until my friend Elena introduced me to Rodan + Fields.

I'm not sure if you've ever heard of them, but this line of skin care was created by the same doctors who started Proactive. I was skeptical at first because they sell through consultants not in stores, but after having a coffee date with Elena and some of her friends who are consultants, and then trying a few samples of the products, I knew this was the real deal. I saw immediate differences in my skin after just a few uses! The products are pricey, but given the effectiveness I knew it was a great investment in my skin's health.

Last winter, I started with the Reverse products - they help erase brown spots, dullness and discoloration due to sun damage and boy was my face suffering from all of those! I used the exfoliating wash every other night, then followed it with the brightening toner, and then the brightening lotion. During the day I used the 50 SPF on my face, neck and chest, then followed with my normal day moisturizer. On the days I didn't use the exfoliating wash, I used a gentle non-soap based cleanser with my Clairsonic.

After 3 months, my skin looked brighter, clearer and those pesky freckles on my upper lip (the ones I get every summer that look weird in photos) and the brown spots on my forehead were gone. I also needed less makeup, like mineral powder or BB cream, to make my skin look healthy, clear and bright.

This spring I switched to a few items from the Refine product line which is all anti-aging in nature. Instead of the brightening toner and lotion, I swapped in the night renewing serum, overnight restorative cream and the multi function eye cream.  I continued to use the exfoliating wash from the Reverse line once a week, and my Clairsonic every few days. After another 3 months, I noticed that the lines on my forehead and around my mouth weren't as deep, and I had less fine lines around my eyes. Also my skin was smoother, softer and had a natural glow to it. I didn't have to wear any makeup on my face, save a little under eye concealer and mascara and lipgloss if I chose.

My "after" skin
It's been a year since I started using Rodan + Fields and I could not be happier with the results! I'm going to continue to use the Refine products every day, and as needed, the Reverse products if my skin starts to show signs of dullness again. I am really glad I found these products. Cheers to anti-aging stuff that actually works!

If you're interested, my friend Elena is a consultant for the company - you can contact her here.

P.S. This post was not sponsored, I just love these products so much!

My 12th "fix"

Thursday, November 13, 2014

I had an 11th "fix" from Stitch Fix, but it was so bad that I didn't even take photos of the clothes. Everything was the wrong size or the wrong color for my skin tone.

But fix #12 was perfect, so perfect that I kept all 5 pieces! And before you start scrolling to the photos, let me just apologize in advance for the photo quality (grainy iPhone), the smudges on my mirror (thanks Brighton), the fact that most of these are selfies (look it gets dark at 5pm and my husband doesn't get home until after 6pm so its impossible to take these with a real camera) and the fact that I need to iron like every single piece. Ahem, I'm sorry.

Now, here is what they sent me:

Scallop Hem Blouse

I would never chose this color for myself, but it actually works! I love the scallop along the bottom and the open back of this shirt. It's something I can wear to work, on a date or with a pair of jeans and flats for a more casual event. Also, please excuse the no makeup face and no-heat curl hair.

Striped A line skirt

This skirt is lined, has pockets on the front, not the sides (a must for wide hips like mine, otherwise the pockets gape and make me look like I have wings) and it's a nice neutral stripe - cream, grey and tan. This fit and flattered my lower half and I can wear this in all seasons.

Sequined dress

I asked for a fancy top or dress for the holidays and they sent me this. I would never choose this off the rack - it's a bit too straight for my body shape, and the red isn't a true red, but with a thin metallic belt and some high heels it looks really great! Now to throw a party so I can wear it!

3/4 sleeve button cardigan

I needed some more items for my work wardrobe and this royal blue cardigan is great. Soft, fits nicely and I can layer either a tank of a button down under it. I also like that it is a vneck - much more flattering on my shape.

Striped dolman top

I love a striped shirt or sweater (I think I own 6 already) and this shirt is super soft, has a longer hem and the dolman sleeve isn't too big (sometimes they can make you look wider than you are). I wore this straight out of the box two days in a row and I can tell this will be a staple in my wardrobe.

Beauty: New products I am loving

Thursday, October 23, 2014

I spent a few hours in Sephora and Target the other day, stocking up on some new (and much needed) products. Here are my new favorite finds:

Clockwise from top:

Benefit erase paste
This is the best concealer I have ever used. It has a nice peach tint to it to help combat the greenish blue under eye circles I have been rocking lately, and does not budge. It's a true paste, not a liquid concealor and a little goes a long way.

Benefit Benetint
I have always used powder blush, but by the middle of the day, it's gone. This tint stays put - all I need is three tiny stripes of the tint on my cheeks, a quick blend with my fingers and I have a nice pinky natural looking flush.

Living Proof 5-in-1 styling creme
My hair is prone to frizz and doesn't hold curl unless I load up on products. This is truly five products in one - a styling creme to smooth and reduce frizz, a volumizing and thickening agent, and a serum for polish. A little of this and a blow dry makes my hair look like I just left the salon. I love this product!

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel nail polish
I love gel manicures, but I have not loved the damage from soaking and scraping off the polish. Their formula doesn't require the extensive acetone soak that salon polish does, and the product stays put. I actually had to go to three stores to find this because it was sold out (that's how good this stuff is). My favorite colors are Pink Tank, Too Haute and Greyfitti.

Benefit they're real! mascara
I know this is the third Benefit product I'm writing about (I promise this post isn't sponsored!) but they make some of the best makeup on the market. I received a sample size of this mascara last year and fell in love. I have been using Diorshow mascara in black for the last year, but it flakes like crazy. This mascara is just as good, less expensive and doesn't flake or smudge.

Any new beauty products you are loving right now?

My 10th "fix"

Tuesday, June 3, 2014

This was my best fix to date and the first time I have ever kept all five pieces! I was pretty specific in my ordering - I wanted a few dresses I could wear at work, or on a date and a maxi skirt plus a cute shirt. They did a great job!

Here is what they sent me (and please excuse the grainy iPhone photos):

Striped maxi skirt
I have worn this at least 4 times since they sent it to me. This is so comfortable and can be dressed up or down. This photo is from a Sunday after church. Brighton wanted in on the action too!

Teal and cream dress with a keyhole back

This is such a nice color and material. The fit was perfect and I love the detail in the back.

Polkadot fit and flare dress and chevron bag
Gotta love the bathroom work selfie! This dress is cotton, lightweight and reminds me of something Joan from Mad Men would wear. It is super comfortable and I will be wearing this one for years.
The bag is a large cotton clutch in a navy and cream and it's plastic lined (a must since I have a kid who insists on putting her sippy cup in my bag). It can hold my wallet, lipsticks, phone, keys and plenty more. I love it!

Grey twisted tank
I forgot to iron this shirt before I took the picture, but this is one of my favorites. I have worn it so much - with black skinnies on a date, with colored cotton shorts and flip flops, with a skirt and cardigan for work. It's got a nice drape in the front and is cotton so is machine washable - score!

This was the best fix and I can't wait to get my next one.  If you haven't signed up yet for their service, I highly recommend it! You can sign up directly with them, or use my referral link: stitchfix.com

My Ninth "Fix"

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

I haven't had a "Fix" from StitchFix since last October and was looking to add a few more items for work to my wardrobe, specifically a skirt and a dress. I love the ease of someone else picking items for me and my stylist Margaret knows my style quite well now.

Here is what they sent:

Textured Pencil Skirt

I loved the color and I'm not afraid of a pencil skirt, but it was skin tight! Like street-walker, Kardashian tight. It was the right size on the label, but ran about a size and a half smaller. If it hadn't been so darn tight I would have kept it. Verdict: Return

Cut-out detail blouse
I would have never picked this off the rack as I am not normally an orange fan, but the color was incredibly flattering! I loved the detail in the front, but this was was about a size too big. This brand (Collective Concepts) has always worked for me in a size medium, but this blouse looked more like a large. I even held it up next to the other shirts I have from the same company and it looked like the sizing was really off. Verdict: Return

Fit and Flare Striped Dress
I do love myself a stripe! This dress was the cutest thing - I loved the heavy material, the feminine drape of the skirt and the little yellow belt with the bow, but it drowned me! It was at least 4 inches too wide on both sides. Again, size was right on the label, but this dress looked like an XXL. I could tell it was too big before I even tried it on. Given how oversized it was, I don't think alterations would have worked. Verdict: Return

Dark Rinse Skinny Jeans
I have been searching for a high quality dark rinse skinny jean for almost a year. I have made do with a pair from Loft, but these are the money! They had the right amount of stretch, are super dark and the rise is perfect. Verdict: Keep

Statement Pendant Necklace
At first glance, I loved this necklace. It looks like a J.Crew knock off and is in pretty colors that would work year-round. But I couldn't wrap my head around the price ($34), when I have seen similar necklaces at F21 and online for way less. Verdict: Return

At first glance, I thought I'd keep all the clothes in the fix, but the sizing just didn't work this time. It's not my stylist's fault, as she is following what I entered into the style profile online, but it's a shame they don't let customers return items for the right size (heck I'd pay for the shipping if needed).  I'm going to schedule a fix for next month and ask for a skirt and dress again - hopefully something will work!

My Eighth "fix"

Friday, November 8, 2013

Yep, I'm addicted.  I know I post about StitchFix all the time, but I love it. This was my birthday fix and here are the pieces from my 8th fix:

1) Black skinny jeans with a cute zipper detail

2) Eggplant eyelet dress

3) Green striped v-neck blouse

4) Oversized sweater

5) Teal skinny jeans

I had a new stylist this time, but she did fantastic. She really paid attention to my Pinterest style board and seemed to understand my body type, plus what I asked for with this fix: I wanted a new pair of skinny jeans, a chunky sweater in a modern print and a dress I could wear to work or on a date. I loved the dress (even though I would have never picked it from off the rack), the sweater was exactly what I was looking for and the black skinny jeans with the zipper detail were a perfect fit.

If you haven't signed up yet for their service, I highly recommend it! You can sign up directly with them, or use my referral link: stitchfix.com
* I will received a $25 credit for each referral I receive. I was not compensated for this post, I just love the service so much!

Lipstick Favorites

Monday, November 4, 2013

I am a lipstick girl. I have never been a woman who can pull off a lot of eye makeup because I don’t know how to apply it properly and it just doesn’t fit my style. I like it on other people, just not me.

But I love a bright lip - reds, pinks, corals – all of them. I love a fresh nude with a healthy application of gloss. I love tinted lip balms and lip stains and those amazing lipsticks that look like crayons. Give me an hour in Target alone and $50 and I’d spend it on lipstick, gloss, balm, exfoliaters and a nude lip pencil. Ask any of my girlfriends about my huge bag of lipsticks in my purse - I always have it with me. I love it!

So here are my favorites:

It has a lipstain on one end with a nice pointy applicator and a solid chapstick on the other. This goes on slightly sheer so you can layer it to get the color you want. I especially love their true red (called Gothic) because red lipsticks tend to bleed, but this one stays put for 8 hours. Seriously I have applied it before work and it was still on when I left at 5pm.

It's pricey, but I love this lipstick. The color is vibrant and concentrated, so it stays on for a long time. Plus it's not too shiny, and not too matte.

If I want to try a new crazy shade, this is what I buy. This brand is inexpensive, pretty good quality and like the name says, moisturizing.

This is a knock off the original Clinique Chubby Stick for lips, but this one isn’t a gloss, it’s a lipstain and lipbalm built in together. This goes on sheer, so its perfect if you want to experiment with a really bright color. I have this in a few versions of pink and I wore their coral color almost all summer.

What are your favorite lipsticks?

My Makeup Basics

Monday, October 28, 2013

I have always preferred drugstore brand makeup as a whole because it offers you tons of options for a fair price. Also, since a lot of the drugstore brands try to mimic pricier brands (e.l.f. consistently comes out with Sephora and MAC knockoffs, ) you can purchase a lot of new items for less.

Here are my makeup basics using all drugstore brands! These are the items I use every day, regardless of how I choose to wear eyeshadow, eyeliner or lipstick. The total for these items (save the anti-wrinkle cream) is less than $20!
Blurry iPhone photo alert!!!
 Face
I have never been a fan of foundation, but I like to have a little coverage, especially in areas where I have sun damage. I used mineral powder for a long time, but was never satisfied with the results. BB Creams have been a godsend, but some of the formulas are still a little too thick for my taste, so I mix my day moisturizer with equal parts CoverGirl BB Cream in Fair/Light and apply that to my entire face and part of my neck using my fingers. Then I use CoverGirl Invisible blemish concealer in fair underneath my eyes and across my upper lip (I have tons of freckles there and it can make me look weird if I don’t cover them up) and apply it with a foundation brush.

I also apply a healthy dose of e.l.f. Studio Blush in Twinkle Pink for spring/summer and in Tickled Pink for fall/winter on the apples of my cheeks with a fluffy blush brush. e.l.f.’s blush is really sheer and has a little sheen to it, so it looks natural and gives your cheeks a nice flush!

Eyes
I have just become a fan of filling in my eyebrows – I feel like it really finishes your face and makes you look younger. I stopped plucking my eyebrows a few years ago (good lord did I used to overtweeze!), save the strays that were in between my eyes and the ones in my eyelid area. Over the years the edges of my eyebrows have thinned out, so I apply the powder from e.l.f. Studio Eyebrow Kit in Light with a stiff makeup brush to fill them in, and finish them with a sweep of the wax using the little applicator brush that comes with the kit to keep them in place.

Then I curl my lashes 3 times – once at the base, once halfway up, then again on the ends (holding for 3 seconds each time so they really stay curled) and apply 4-5 coats of CoverGirl Lashblast Volumizing Mascara in Very Black.

A blurry iPhone selfie - but this is me with just the basics on and a little lipstick
 What are your makeup basics?

Stitch Fix Mix

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

If you've read this blog for any amount of time, you know that I am a big fan of the styling service called Stitch Fix. I've added quite a few special and beautiful pieces to my wardrobe and Stitch Fix has really changed my outlook on style - I've become more adventurous in my choices and much more open to colors and patterns that I would not normally choose on my own. Here are all my current pieces from the service:

5 sleeveless blouses, 4 dresses, 3 blouses,1 skirt, 1 pair of pants, 1 leather jacket, 3 sweaters, plus some bangles (not pictured) from Stitch Fix in my closet!!!
So when Stitch Fix contacted me about hosting their first ever Fix Mix, I had to say yes. The idea works like this - Stitch Fix would schedule a fix for each guest and the fixes are delivered to a central location. Then the guest would get together and would open the fixes together – this gives each guest an opportunity to get feedback from the group, as well as potentially purchase an item from someone’s else’s fix if that guest didn’t want it.

My group of girlfriends already host a semi-annual clothing swap, plus regular girls nights, so this was perfect for us. Stitch Fix sent all the fixes to my home on Thursday and Friday, along with some cute decorations and recipe ideas and we got together Saturday night to have our Fix Mix.

We had a great time eating yummy snacks, drinking a special drink I found on Pinterest, and trying on our fix items, plus swapping where we could. I didn't end up purchasing any of the items from my own fix, but instead purchased 2 items from one friend and 1 item from another.

It was a fun night and I look forward to hosting another Fix Mix in the future!

Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post, or the Fix Mix, however I received a credit for each referral from any guests who had not previously tried the service. Sign up for Stick Fix here: stitchfix.com
