We redid our garden yesterday. We started it about two years ago with some old railroad ties and a whole lotta TLC. Unfortunately, our neighborhood has a serious
slug problem (yes, slugs!) that destroyed everything we grew from seedlings.

Matt came up with a great solution - a raised garden box that is attached to the back of our deck. We've filled it with cypress mulch (which is very rough in texture and not slug friendly) and will be adding some
diatomaceous earth as an added defense once we get another non-windy day.
We also added some new flowers to our empty pots and beds in the front of the house.

1. gardens make me happy. very happy.
ReplyDelete2. have you tried beer for slugs? first off, the best (natural/organic) defense for slugs is going out in the early morning (when the sun is rising) and picking them off.
Another trick: beer. dig a hole and place cup inside the whole.. so the top is level with the dirt... pour beer inside... imagine a swimming pool of beer for your slugs... the will dive right in.... and drown.
We did try beer and it worked somewhat. There were so many slugs that even though we probably wiped out 1/2 of the population our garden was still destroyed by them. But we are definitely doing that again this year in addition to our raised beds and diatomaceous earth!
ReplyDeleteJust got a tomato plant myself! Love it!
